What Is Working Equitation?

Working Equitation combines classical dressage principles with practical horsemanship skills, challenging horses and riders to demonstrate balance, precision, communication, and versatility.

Rooted in the traditional working practices of European countries, this growing equestrian sport offers something for nearly every rider.

Working Equitation includes four phases:

  • Working Dressage: Demonstrate rhythm, balance, suppleness, and harmony through a prescribed dressage test.

  • Ease of Handling: Navigate obstacles such as gates, bridges, and slalom patterns with accuracy, confidence, and partnership.

  • Speed: Put your skills to the test as you negotiate an obstacle course against the clock.

  • Cattle Handling: At the highest levels of competition, riders may demonstrate traditional cattle-working skills.

Whether your goals are recreational or competitive, Working Equitation provides an exciting way to develop your horse's confidence, responsiveness, and athletic ability.
